HALLOWEEN!! :D

HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!!!
I love dressing up every year, it's soo much fun! I was really hoping on being a Beatlemania girl but I couldn't find myself a british flag dress at all! So possibly next year. I also had two costumes this year, this is one and I was also a 60s mod girl :) I'm wearing this tonight at work while I pass out candy! :) It's so cute to see all the little kids dressed up, I kind of wish I was 8 again.
I hope you all had a great weekend! I definitely did but it's time to start focusing on school again!

  1. While I'm sure you weren't trying to be, are you aware that your costume is actually fairly offensive? After seeing a huge influx of people dressed up as Natives or whatever, I'm just trying to inform people about the fact that their costume is, in fact, offensive.
Try reading this article. :) http://bitchmagazine.org/post/costume-cultural-appropriation
I hope you had a lovely time though!!

  2. Hey, its Halloween, and I think your costume looks great! The dream weavers a nice touch.
I wish I had found a top hat in time, because I was going to dress up as a ringmaster. Haha, but looks like you'll be having fun!

  3. I am sorry if this costume did or does offend anyone. I had 2 teens of Native American descent that came up to me and actually seemed pleased I was dressed up as a part of their culture. I don't believe that I am portraying the race in any rude or insulting way. I'm sure there are some ways that costumes can offend a wide variety of people and that's unfortunate. I was just having fun dressing up and I'm sure most people would understand and if not then I'm truly sorry. And who is it to say that I am not of Native descent myself.. it's actually a part of my background as well.

  19. You can "look cute" and still be part of culture appropriation. The problem is in using culturally significant items from communities you aren't a part of. Having some native ancestry doesn't get you off the hook. Almost everyone in this country has some indigenous blood in them, but it doesn't mean that we know what is like to grow up as Cherokee or Lakota. It doesn't mean that we understand the sacredness of a the ceremonies or the right way to practice them. This sort of outfit contributes to the white washing in this country. Do you know what indigenous nations those clothes would be representing? Do you know the history of the dream catcher? Do you know what the paint on your face represents or which indigenous nations used paint? The commercialization of these items contributes to the collective misunderstanding about being "Indian" in this country. There are so many native nations, languages, cultures, and practices. If you look for a Native voice on these subjects, you will find it. Many feel (write, speak, and sing about the ways) they have not only lost their land and livelihood through the colonization--but are also having their culture and spiritual practices stolen by people who have never taken the time to learn about them in the first place.
